I buy bananas because I think I should. I know that they are good for me. And, yes, I should eat them. I should perfectly time that millisecond when they go from unripened to ripe. But I don’t.
I walk past them in their bowl and inevitably don’t touch them until they are so ripe the entire apartment smells like bananas. And that is the moment when I get to turn my good intentions into banana bread.
I don’t have a go-to banana bread recipe yet, so as I watched them brown – this time an entire bunch, I literally did not eat a one – I started hunting for another recipe to try. I found this one for Jacked-Up Banana Bread on Smitten Kitchen and it called for BOURBON. Dealsies.
Obviously, it was great. Lots of flavor and probably what every little banana on the shelf dreams of becoming. The consistency in my loaf was good, although it turned out a bit shorter and denser than other recipes I’ve used. But, it has bourbon in it .. so really, why complain?
Banana-waster tip: Sometimes, I go crazy with the banana eating and only have 1 or 2 left turn brown in their bowl. Did you know that you can toss an over-ripened bananas in the freezer (peel and all)? They turn black (they’re supposed to) and are so mushy and really, pretty gross, but they are the best for banana bread.

After a week of delivery and getting back into the real-life-mode after the holidays, I finally did some cooking over the weekend.
First up: some home-cooked date night steaks, my favorite veggie side, and some home fries that I could eat with every meal – but usually only end up with enough for breakfast the next morning. That I secretly eat before Clay realizes there were leftovers.
+ Pan Seared Steaks
I am a recipe cook and always need something in front of me so although I’ve done variations of this in the past, I had to quickly Google around to find a recipe involving searing, cast iron, and finishing off the steaks in the oven.
+ Green Beans with Shallots
This is my go-to veggie. It’s super easy and always turns out great.
+ Two-Potato Home Fries
Potatoes are one of the things I crave the most – almost always in the French or Home fries varietal. These home fries with Yukon gold and sweet potatoes are just the right mix and I seriously make them all the time.
My only cooking this week ended up being back-to-back. The Saturday NFL games threw me off (Go Pack!), but were a great excuse to make this chili AND biscuits recipe that I stumbled across in the Smitten Kitchen archives.
+ Beef Chili + Sour Cream Cheddar Biscuits
I love chili and make it quite a bit, but this was my first attempt at biscuits, and if I don’t say so myself … they were awesome. And, well, super easy so I probably shouldn’t get much credit. I almost didn’t make them because I don’t have a 3 1/2-inch biscuit cutter (really, who does?), but like any self-respecting Brooklynite I had plenty of Mason jar lids (discarded from my drinking glasses) and they were just the right size.

I’ve never been big on setting (or following through with) New Year’s Resolutions. Although that places me firmly amongst the majority of humans, this year I decided to do something a little bit different.
I thought a lot about what I want this year, and you know what I really want? More NAPS.
Naps I can do.
From there, I thought about what else I want. And what I don’t.
I don’t want to go to the gym because it’s a new year and everyone is supposed to buy a gym membership. I don’t want to stand on my scale once a week and base decisions on the numbers. There’s too much Mac and Cheese in the world. And I don’t want to stop eating pizza
as long as my pants still fit no matter what. I want to cook and eat good food. I want to get outside more. I want to play more games – video, board, whatever I can get my hands on. I want to call my mom and my dad, without needing a reminder in my phone to do it. (Ugh, sorry, I am the worst.) And while I’m at it, I want to call my brother, even though he is the king of one-word answers. I want to stop wasting time on Facebook when there are a billion interesting things on the Internet that I should spend my time reading instead of status updates from that girl that I think I went to high school with.
And I want to remember all of these – although, it’s pretty unlikely that I would forget about the naps. Just in case, this morning I spent some time in Photoshop to make a new wallpaper for my iPhone and iPad.
I’m pleased with how it turned out, and excited to be assaulted by my goals every time I pick up my phone to waste some time on Facebook …
